What hypnosis really is... AND ISN'T.
You see, the world of hypnosis is full of weird and wacky myths, mainly created by Hollywood and the media. And it's ABOUT TIME the record was set straight!
So let's dispel some of those crazy hypnosis myths right now...
MYTH 1 - A hypnotist can make you do things against your will.
This is absolutely untrue. A hypnotist has NO power over you and cannot make you do anything you don't want to do yourself. All a hypnotist does is guide you into a hypnotic state - something you can easily do yourself, perhaps with help from a hypnosis recording.
MYTH 2 - You can get stuck in a hypnotic state and never come out.
Again, this is COMPLETELY untrue. If you were hypnotized by a hypnotist who then left the room and never returned, you would come out of the hypnotic state in a few minutes in one of two ways. Either you would realize the hypnotist was no longer speaking and wake up feeling fine. Or you would fall into normal sleep for a few minutes, and again wake up feeling fine.
MYTH 3 - When you are hypnotized you have no control over your actions.
This is another common misconception. While you are hypnotized a hypnotist may make suggestions, but you still have the power to accept or reject those suggestions. If he suggests robbing a bank, for example, you would simply say no and come out of the hypnotic state - unless you really wanted to rob a bank, of course!
MYTH 4 - Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized.
Again, this is FALSE. In fact, the opposite is true. Research has shown that intelligent people are actually easier to hypnotize - always assuming that they want to be, of course.
MYTH 5 - Hypnosis is dangerous.
False again. Hypnosis is both natural and safe. We all routinely enter states of "hypnosis" during a typical waking day. And there are no known records of anyone having been physically or mentally harmed as a direct result of hypnosis.
So much for the myths...
... WHAT THEN *IS* HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness, in which the conscious mind is bypassed and the deeper, subconscious mind is accessed. In this state the amazing power of visualization and suggestion, given by yourself or another, can be harnessed to produce real, deep-seated change.
Hypnosis is a state of mental and physical relaxation, along with a more focused sense of concentration. Hypnosis is not sleep... in fact, most people find they are more aware of smells, sounds and feelings than usual. They are also more open to suggestion.
This is what allows a hypnotist to offer certain suggestions, with the aim of bringing about positive change.
Hypnosis as a mental state is similar to other states of engrossed concentration, where a person becomes oblivious to his or her surroundings while lost in thought.
For example - Have you ever been driving and suddenly found yourself much further down the road, without any memory of driving the intervening distance? You were clearly not asleep during this time, and your body was functioning normally, but your mind was elsewhere. It's a common experience. This detached yet still aware state is very similar to the state of a person under hypnosis.
Ultimately, though, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
YOU are the one who allows your mind to be placed into a hypnotic state, and YOU are the one who has the power to resist any unwanted suggestions.
That's why, strictly speaking, it is inaccurate when people say they were hypnotized. What they really mean is that they allowed their mind to be hypnotized, or they allowed a hypnotist to give suggestions they chose to follow.
But no-one else can control your mind, unless you first grant them permission to do so.
Hypnosis is a powerful tool which can be used to generate deep-seated, long-lasting change in many aspects of our lives. Here are just a few of the positive outcomes that can be achieved through hypnosis, whether administered by yourself or a hypnotist...
